Director, Negotiated Benefits Department

We are seeking a Director of the Negotiated Benefits Department.  The position is located in UFCW’s headquarters in Washington, DC and reports to the Executive Vice President and National Director of Collective Bargaining.  The Director will manage a small, professional staff and a department that is responsible for providing employee benefits expertise, negotiation and advisory services to UFCW’s local unions, Trustees and Executive Committee relating to collective bargaining and public policy issues affecting multiemployer health and pension benefit programs.  The Director represents the UFCW in collective bargaining activities; advises the EVP, Trustees and Executive Leadership on collective bargaining issues, recommendations and strategies; liaises with external employee benefit organizations and policy committees in order to keep abreast of public policy and legislative developments affecting multiemployer health and pension benefit plans; advising and preparing reports for the EVP, Executive Committee, local union leadership and others on policy developments, issues and recommendations and; participating in collectively bargained contract discussions providing negotiation leadership and support.

The ideal candidate must have a minimum of:   a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree in a related field is desirable); expertise in multiemployer health and pension employee benefit plans to include plan design, pricing concepts and financial aspects, understanding of health underwriting principles and ability to read and comprehend actuarial valuation reports; 10 years of experience in collective bargaining activities to include working in a multiemployer environment (e.g., union organization, professional service /consulting firm that supports union clients, trust fund office, etc.) and; understanding of the financial aspects of trust fund operations.  Substantial negotiating experience and skills, strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills with ability to build rapport with diverse audiences and communicate complex technical subject matter to non-technical audiences and, a willingness to engage in travel up to 30% are mandatory.
